Cycling For Cancer Awareness🚴

Turning 50 years old is considered a golden jubilee and is usually celebrated with gold. We were so blessed to have Vincent and Lily Wong, share their hearts of gold by fundraising for Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) in celebration of their 50th birthdays.

Lily and Vincent Wong

Vincent and Lily originally planned to make their 50th memorable by undertaking an interstate bicycle ride from Petaling Jaya, Selangor to Kluang, Johor. Upon hearing about their plan, The Leaderonomics Club* challenged the couple to do it for a worthy cause – to fundraise for impactful research in Asian prominent cancers and save precious lives (hint, hint- that’s us). They were more than happy to accept the challenge, and their three sons, Joel, Joshua, and Jovin, agreed to participate and make it a family event.

The journey was set to start on 29th December, 2022, in PJ and end on 1st January, 2023, in Kluang, Vincent’s hometown. Coined the ‘Cancer Care Cycle (CCC)’ fundraising project, the Wong family aimed to raise RM30,000 for CRMY and started a fundraising page on Give.Asia, which they also used as a sharing platform to post videos of their progress day-by-day.

Joel, who currently teaches at Seri Jubli International School (SJIS), commemorated his 22nd birthday as well during the journey, leveraging on his social media network to encourage more donations and gain supporters.

“I wanted to make a difference and inspire my students. I hope to raise awareness for cancer research so that more people want to get involved.”

Despite facing challenges such as heat, rain, punctured tires, and fatigue, the Wong family persevered and successfully crossed the finish line on 1st January, 2023. Their relatives residing in Kluang also joined in to show their support, making the final 100m cycle a family affair of 3 generations – grandparents, parents, and grandchildren!

“We are overwhelmed by the encouragement we received. It was not an easy journey, but knowing that we were doing it for a good cause kept us motivated. We hope that our efforts will inspire others to contribute to the fight against cancer.

Our children won’t remember their exams, studies or housework. Our children will remember lasting moments such as fun family adventures.

Being able to come together and achieve this with family in my hometown is truly meaningful and an unforgettable experience.”

The CCC project was a great success, and we hope it inspires student communities to take charge and recognise the value of cancer research towards a future free of the fear of cancer. Thanks to the generous support of 156 givers, Vincent and Lily exceeded their fundraising goal, raising a grand total of RM32,841.

The Wong family’s perseverance, grit, and team spirit serve as an exemplary reflection of the power of determination and dedication to a cause. To every one who supported the Wong family’s efforts – from donating to cheering them on at the finishing line, thank you! Your giving and presence made a difference!
